For some schools, the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge was a bit of fun.
But for others, such as Melton Secondary College, it meant so much more.
Marilyn Sorensen, the current year 11 and 12 sub-school assistant, said the college was a part of the worldwide competition for 17 years until it was axed because of a lack of sponsorship and support in 2010.
Ms Sorensen said the annual art event had kept some students out of trouble, others in school and helped create a community bond.
“There were a lot of people involved in it,” she said. “The students absolutely loved it and for students that weren’t very academic, it was an outlet … it kept them in school.
“A lot of students even enrolled in our school because of our involvement in the Eisteddfod.”
In honour of the fondly remembered and colourful cultural competition, the school’s greatest Rock Eisteddfod moments will be celebrated during a reunion at Melton Country Club on Saturday, November 25, from 1-6pm.
The afternoon event will feature screenings of the school’s Eisteddfod performances and finger food and drinks. Tickets cost $10.
“It was a way of getting everyone to get together and remembering the times had together,” Ms Sorensen said
The Eisteddfod was initiated by the Rock Eisteddfod Challenge Foundation and aimed to promote healthy lifestyle choices, particularly abstinence from drugs, alcohol and cigarettes.
