A Melton South resident says he fears the parklands around his house are becoming a “wasteland”.
Darren Murray told Star Weekly the mounting rubbish problem around Parklea Homestead was getting out of hand.
“I normally walk around there with the dogs and there is everything from household rubbish to hard rubbish and old building scraps,” Mr Murray said.
“On the Abbey Road side of the park, there’s a spot there where people dump tree clippings and lawn. It’s becoming a real dumping ground.”
Mr Murray said he had reported the sites to council and urged other residents to follow suit.
Melton mayor Bob Turner said litter and illegal dumping would not be tolerated and offenders would be prosecuted when caught.
“There is absolutely no excuse for illegal dumping,” Cr Turner said.
“It’s disgusting to think that some people believe they can use our beautiful city as a personal dumping ground.
“You can be fined more than $9000 for dumping rubbish.
“If you are caught illegally dumping … you will be fined – it’s as simple as that.”
Melton homeowners and tenants receive two free tip passes a year that enable them to drop hard waste at the Melton Transfer Station.
Residents can also organise a hard waste collection from their home.
