A night sleeping under the stars at the mighty MCG has become an annual pilgrimage for Melton South’s Lauren Kelly.
Ms Kelly will rug up for the Sleep at the ’G event for the sixth time on May 16, helping to raise much-needed funds for the Melbourne City Mission and its push to end youth homelessness.
Ms Kelly has attended the event ever since she heard the story of Morgan ‘Mouse’ Perry, who was killed while sleeping under a bridge in Enterprize Park in 2014.
“He didn’t deserve to live this way and he most certainly did not deserve to die this way,” Ms Kelly said. “I hadn’t realised we had so many people experiencing homelessness in Australia. After investigating this further, I found the Sleep at the ’G event and immediately registered to attend.
“I want to continue supporting the great work MCM does … I also believe that attending this event each year helps to keep the memory of Morgan ‘Mouse’ Perry alive.
“Our team name has been Team Mouse’s Enterprize, in memory of Morgan and the place he lost his life.”
Over the years, Team Mouse’s Enterprize has raised $11,000 for the work of MCM.
“I have always had a great night at the event, spending the night with like-minded people who care about making a difference to youth homelessness brings a smile to my face,” Ms Kelly said. “I will be dusting off my unicorn onesie, my mermaid tail blankie, a few little snacks and, as always, a poster with Morgan’s pic to make sure he is remembered.”
