While coronavirus has been on the minds of everyone in recent months, health services are reminding locals not to ignore other health concerns.

The North West Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) said it was more important than ever for people to stay up-to-date with visits to their GP and stay on top of their health in the current climate.

They have launched a new ’It’s OK to see your GP’ campaign, after worrying reports that people are missing or delaying regular health checks or medical care during the coronavirus lockdown.

Doctors are concerned that some people might be putting off important medical care including cancer screening, vaccinations and managing chronic conditions such as diabetes and coronary disease, putting themselves at risk.

For some people with chronic conditions, putting off seeing their GP could be just as dangerous as COVID-19, warns NWMPHN chief executive Christopher Carter.

“GP services are still available, and many steps are being taken to make sure people can receive the high-quality care they need during this crisis,” Adjunct Associate Professor Carter said.

“This includes telehealth and other options to help you keep you safe while also keeping you in touch with your health.”

The health network said it was still important to follow social distancing measures when visiting the doctor, but that visits have been safely conducted throughout the pandemic and would continue to happen.
