Dome among the gum trees in Ballan

Next time you’re passing Ballan by train, you may just notice it … a space ship-looking structure in the middle of a paddock.

The Dome, dubbed by locals the “igloo” or “spaceship”, was built by Anthony Clarke in 2008 as a house for all climate extremes.

Mr Clarke said the house is hurricane, earthquake, tornado and bushfire resistant.

Mr Clarke’s house has become a bit of a tourist icon for Ballan in recent years, with at least one person knocking on his door every month to find out a bit more about it.

The Dome sits on 5.6 acres, has six bedrooms, five bathrooms and a two-car garage.

Mr Clarke is ready to move on and retire. The house, at 14 Denholms Road, is on the market for $1.2 million.
