Dogs maul sheep across Moorabool

Late last year, more than 30 sheep sustained horrific injuries in vicious dog attacks across Moorabool shire over several weeks.

Star Weekly reported farmers had to euthanase sheep that had been injured.

On June 22, 2013, a six-year-old girl was left with permanent scars after being mauled on the face by a Kelpie at Balliang.

These and other cases of dog attacks could help shape laws relating to dangerous and restricted dog breeds in Victoria.

The parliamentary economy and infrastructure committee is calling for public submissions to an inquiry on dog laws in Victoria.

The inquiry seeks to canvas community concerns and to propose changes to the Domestic Animals Act 1994 in relation to the current moratorium on the destruction of restricted breed dogs.

Committee chair Joshua Morris said the issue of dangerous dogs, and in particular restricted breed dogs, invokes strong views.

“There have been well-documented cases of serious, and occasionally fatal, dog attacks, which have led to calls for stronger action from government.”

Melton council compliance manager Ian Stewart said there weren’t any fatal dog attacks by restricted breed and dangerous dogs in the municipality. Details: www.parliament.vic.gov.au/eic. Submissions close Friday, July 10.
