Melton council is encouraging residents to look after the health of their furry feline friends.

The City of Melton has partnered with Westside Community Desexing to offer affordable desexing options.

The discounted program is available to residents of the municipality who have cats in good health.

The council have taken up the program to support animal welfare and encourage responsible pet ownership, with the goal of reducing the number of abandoned cats and kittens.

As part of the program, council will contribute $50 towards each cat being desexed, with the only eligibility requirement being proof of residency.

Melton mayor Goran Kesic said the program would protect local wildlife by reducing feral cat numbers and protect domestic cats.

“The program aims to eliminate unnecessary euthanasia by reducing the number of

stray cats or kittens entering shelters and pounds,” Cr Kesic said.
