When Amelia Williamson was asked to design outfits for rock band Stonefield, it was a dream come true.
And then the “rollercoaster” brief came – use upcycled materials.
“It’s a very new learning curve,” Amelia said. “It took me a few weeks to actually start coming up with ideas of what I was going to make and what I wanted out of the stuff I had.
“Now, whenever I see off-cuts, I keep them … there’s so much potential in small pieces of fabric.”
The 19-year-old Bacchus Marsh resident was among a dozen Kangan Institute Fashion Design and Technology students who designed the outfits worn by Stonefield at their weekend concert.
The music and sustainable fashion show was a collaboration between Kangan Institute and the Australian Red Cross to create “amazing” upcycled clothes from unsellable fabric donations that would otherwise have gone to landfill.
The show was held in Melbourne, with all money raised going to Red Cross.
Amelia is pursuing her own music-focused design label, Blazing Monkeys, while working at a uniform company in Richmond.
“My dream is to be dressing musicians so this opportunity has been perfect for me,” she said.
