Dangerous drivers targeted

Caroline Springs police arrested two teenagers and issued 146 infringements as part of an operation focused on e-bike compliance and general road safety.

Police utilised the drone unit to support the work of local general duties as well as highway patrol officers to enforce road safety on Friday, September 5.

Over 1100 road users were checked during the one-day blitz.

The most common offences detected were using mobile phones while driving, unlicenced driving and speeding, which formed part of the 146 infringements issued.

Two 17 year olds were arrested after police received several reports of alleged e-bikes being ridden extremely dangerously.

The two riders were allegedly observed riding on the footpath and endangering the lives of pedestrians.

The duo are expected to be charged on summons with conduct endangering life.

Caroline Springs Acting Sergeant Callan Davey said police employ a range of tactics to catch dangerous drivers and cyclists and remain on the lookout for reckless activity

“Unfortunately, the increase in e-bike usage has also seen a rise in road trauma involving these vehicles,” Acting Sergeant Davey said.

“Responsibility lies with those choosing to ride e-bikes, likewise those choosing to get behind the wheel of a car.”

Caroline Springs police said it will continue to run targeted operations in the area to detect high risk, dangerous road users.
