Dancing up a storm

Rehearsals are under way as Melton West Primary School children prepare to shine in the Victorian State Schools Spectacular later this year.

The annual production involves more than 3000 students from 200 state government schools participating in dance, music, song, puppetry, magic and behind the scenes stage management, lighting and audio.

This is the third year Melton West has taken part in the event, which will be held on September 16 at Hisense Arena. Thirteen students will be showing off their moves in the mass dance portion of the show.

Supervising teacher Deena Henaway said the students have been honing their skills for months.

“The students have started practising the dances every Friday since March this year,” Ms Henaway said.

“These students feel the music and put their hearts into it and enjoy every minute of dancing.

“I strongly believe that they will take away persistence and determination. These dances aren’t easy to learn and there are many dances to learn. They know to keep their heads up high, have fun, and go at their pace and they will get each of those dances down pat.”

The students will spend the day rehearsing their routines with other schools and choreographers before the Spectacular.
