The Melton and Caroline Springs library and learning hubs will host drop-in craft sessions tomorrow for kids to enjoy during their school holidays.

The sessions are being run by library staff who will also be there to chat to children and parents about their favourite books and the current BIG Summer Read challenge.

During the challenge, children are encouraged to continue reading and being read to during their break from school, to help them continue developing their literacy skills.

Research has shown that kids can lose some of the literacy skills they have gained during the year and start the next year at a disadvantage, which is why the BIG Summer Read Challenge was created.

The challenge uses Beanstack which is a mobile app that rewards you for reading. When a milestone is reached, kids earn ‘badges’ for their Beanstack profile and increase their chances of winning a prize.

Participants need to log a minimum of 10 books and collect five activity badges to complete the challenge. All badges will be released at the start of the program and can be completed at any time.

The major prize for completing the BIG Summer Read will be a 12 month subscription to My Creative Box, which is a monthly subscription service that delivers curated boxes straight to the front door.

The drop-in craft sessions will be held Tuesday January 18 at 11:30am and at 1:30pm at the Melton Library & Learning Hub and the Caroline Springs Library and Learning Hub.
