Council to investigate COVID-19 impact on homelessness

Melton council will investigate how the COVID-19 pandemic has contributed to homelessness in the municipality.

Cr Julie Shannon moved a motion during last night’s council meeting, calling on officers to present a detailed report to council about the pandemic’s impact.

Cr Shannon said officers would draw from any council services and other applicable local organisations, including not-for-profit organisations.

Cr Shannon asked the report to include “hidden homelessness”, such as couch surfing and other casual accommodation options, as well as identify people who were at a high risk of homelessness.

The motion was carried unanimously.
