Council looks into traffic light feasibility near schools

Melton council will investigate the feasibility of installing traffic lights at an intersection which “poses a particular danger to families and young children” in Melton South.

Councillor Brandi Morris raised a motion at the December council meeting calling for the council to investigate the possibility of lights at Exford and Wilsons roads intersection which is in the vicinity of four schools.

In the council agenda, she said there was a lack of adequate traffic control measures at this busy crossing and said the lights would reduce congestion and enhance safety for all road users during peak school hours.

Cr Morris also highlighted community concerns regarding public safety.

“I want to highlight this particular intersection in Melton South, within the vicinity there is four schools, quite large attendance of students at these schools,” she said at the council meeting.

“If anyone is travelling in the South at this time of day, they will be well aware of the risks and safety involved with these particular road.”

Cr Morris said the users of this road are well aware of the safety issues involved in the area, especially the congestion that comes with pick up and drop off at particular times of the day.

All councillors supported the motion.

Councillor Phillip Zada backed the motion, stating it needed to be done before something else worse happens.

“Once the unthinkable happens, then there’s no turning back from it,” he said.

Council officers will also look at other traffic treatment options and costs and will report back to the council at a later date.
