The food and stories of refugees and asylum seekers will be shared this week as Melton celebrates Refugee Week.
While there are events planned for throughout the week, the main celebration will take place on June 19 as Lakeview Senior College comes alive with a variety of food stalls, live music and spoken word performances.
This year’s Refugee Week theme is A World of Stories. The school event will feature a talk by author David Nyuol Vincent, who will recount his inspiring journey from a Sudanese refugee who survived famine, wars and 17 years in refugee camps to build a new life in Australia.
Melton mayor Bob Turner said the event would be a memorable celebration.
“This promises to be a vibrant display of culture, cuisine, and the arts,” Cr Turner said.
“Sharing food and stories is a great way for the wider community to celebrate the valuable contributions refugees in our very own city make to society.”
Attendees can also look forward to a performance by Melbourne-based Brazilian band, Vento-pipa.
The event is free but bookings are essential.
