Residents of Ballan and surrounding communities are being encouraged to clean out unwanted household chemicals through an eco-friendly event.

Sustainability Victoria will run a Detox Your Home program in Ballan on June 18, to provide a free service for locals who want to safely dispose chemicals.

Residents are encouraged to bring along their unwanted chemicals to be dropped off on the day, as expert chemists at the event will identify and sort chemicals for transport back to a licensed facility in Melbourne.

Once transported, the chemicals will be processed for reuse if possible, or otherwise safe disposal.

The aim of the program is to make homes safer and protect the environment through safe chemical removal.

Residents can learn about which chemicals can harm the environment, as well as which shouldn’t be placed in a kerbside bin or disposed down the drain.

Attendees can bring along unwanted weed killers, cleaning products, cosmetics, cooking oil, fire extinguishers and more.

The program has been run for more than 27 years and seen the safe removal of 7000 tonnes of toxic chemicals and over 10,000 tonnes of hard-to-recycle materials from households around Victoria.

The event will be held on June 18 from 12pm to 3pm at Ballan Transfer Station and Landfill.
