Celebrating Teej together

Several of Victoria’s largest Nepali community organisations will unite in Diggers Rest next month to celebrate Teej.

Hosted at the Australian Nepalese Multicultural Centre (ANMC) in Diggers Rest from 7am–9pm on August 26, Teej Together is co-organised by the ANMC and Didi Bahini Samaj Victoria (DDSV) in partnership with the Nepalese Association of Victoria (NAV) and NRNA Nari Nikunja Victoria.

ANMC president Tilak Pokharel said that Teej is a cultural day celebrated by women and there are famous stories associated with the event.

“Basically, [women] pray to Lord Shiva on that day asking for the better life of their husband … long life of their husband or partners,” Mr Pokharel said.

“The way they celebrate is they sing, they dance, and they fast without drinking water for the whole day … so, the ANMC host a temple there which has a large Shiva … so most of the Nepali women will visit the temple on that day,” he said.

“The objective of the event is while they are visiting the temple, we want to entertain them, we want them to have a good time together – so we’ll have be having music, we’ll be having dance, and we’ll be having what’s called prasad – which is a gift from God.”

Artists from Nepal will perform throughout the day and there will be children’s activities including a playground, jumping castle, and popcorn.

Teej Together will be celebrated from 7am–9pm on Tuesday, August 26 at the ANMC at 100 Duncans Lane, Diggers Rest.
