A Melton South couple who dedicated their lives to helping others are calling for community support.

Lynda and John Southall have been busy stocking their garage with non-perishable items, toiletries, toys and general household items during the year to donate to families in need at Christmas.

Their latest campaign aims to help make the lives of families a little more joyous during the festive season.

“During the Christmas period, most of the food banks close so some families have nowhere to go,” Mr Southall said.

“So many families appreciate what we’re doing for them.”

The Southalls, with the help of other volunteers, have stocked their Christmas hampers with a variety of foods, including Christmas cakes, milk, custard, fruit, rice and washing detergent and toys. And as Christmas nears, time’s running out for donations.

Mr Southall said they would be accepting donations for this year’s Christmas hampers until November 28 to have them sorted by December 18.

“We need more non-perishables only. We’ve collected everything else, including the toys.”
