Speedsters, unregistered vehicles and drivers using their mobile phones were the target of a recent police blitz during the Australia Day long weekend.
Highway patrol members detected more than 70 speeding offences, 61 unregistered vehicles and 51 mobile phone offences in the Brimbank police service area, which includes Melton, during the four days of Operation Amity last month.
In Moorabool, speeding was the most detected offence with 64 drivers caught.
Road Policing Command Acting Assistant Commissioner Glenn Weir said the results were incredibly disappointing for police.
“Sadly, three families are now mourning the loss of a loved one due to fatalities on our roads,” Assistant Commissioner Weir said.
“These tragic deaths, coupled with the results from Operation Amity, are very concerning to police.”
A 44-year-old woman died after the car she was driving crashed into a tree in Toolern Vale on January 28.
Assistant Commissioner Weir said there were also “far too many people making dangerous and illegal choices” by driving when they were either drug or alcohol affected.
There were 37 drivers detected either drunk or drug affected in the Brimbank service area during the Australia Day long weekend.
