A long-awaited $9.1 million upgrade of Westwood Drive has been given the green light.
Melton council has been working for the past two years to secure state government approval for the construction of the Westwood Drive bridge.
The council has received the go-ahead from Planning Minister Richard Wynne for a construction contract to be awarded to Cut and Fill Pty Ltd, which won the tender process.
The project will include:
•A bridge over Kororoit Creek.
•A new 950-metre road (from Tenterfield Drive to the bridge, then the bridge to Fydler Avenue).
•The creation of a three-metre-wide path.
•The connection of existing footpaths on the western side of the road.
•The building of noise walls near existing houses along the new section of road.
Melton mayor Bob Turner said the upgrades would take significant pressure off Caroline Springs Boulevard and Gourlay Road.
“Council has been working tirelessly over the past two years to make sure the Westwood Drive project gets off the ground,” Cr Turner said.
“These upgrades will mean an easier and more relaxed commute through Caroline Springs for our residents and visitors to the area.”
Construction will take between 12 and 14 months to complete, with the opening expected in early 2019. Contractors will begin work early next year.
