Books bring out the best

James Quinn loves a good book, and mum Melissa is doing all she can to instill in the 22-month-old a lifelong love of books, reading and learning.

The duo joined other parents and youngsters at the launch of Melton council’s 1000 Books Before School campaign, which encourages parents and carers to read 1000 books with their children before they start school.

As part of the campaign, parents will receive a starter pack that includes a tote bag, stickers and reading records. Each time a book is read to their child, they receive a sticker for their reading record, and as reading milestones are achieved, children are rewarded with a small prize.

Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey said research shows children who are read to every day from an early age have extended vocabularies, increased reading readiness and improved cognitive skills when they start school.

Register for the campaign and pick up a starter’s pack at Melton and Caroline Springs libraries. Details: melton.vic.gov.au/libraries.
