Body of missing man found at Werribee Gorge near Rowsley

Police believe they’ve found the body of a missing Melbourne man in a state park near Rowsley more than three weeks after he disappeared.

Yiwei Chu, 28, from Mount Waverley, was last seen buying lunch at a Hungry Jack’s  about noon on Wednesday, April 11.

His disappearance sparked a police and SES search and an emotional public appeal for information from his family.

A passerby found a man’s body in the Werribee Gorge near Ironbark Road, Rowsley about 6pm last Thursday.

Mr Chu’s white Toyota Camry had been found in a carpark near the gorge on April 28.

A Chinese national, Mr Chu lived in Melbourne for eight years and was a full-time student at the Melbourne Institute of Technology.

His last known contact was a text message to his wife Emma Wang at 2.30pm on the day he disappeared.

Ms Wang said she raised the alarm after her husband failed to pick her up from work that day and then wasn’t at their home.

His father, Jianqiang Chu, flew out from China to join the search and made a tearful plea to his son to come home if he could.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and police will prepare a report for the coroner.
