When Melton Storm basketball players don their club jumpers, president Troy Spry beams with pride.
What started as a humble club has turned into a massive hit with locals – particularly in the Sudanese community.
“We provide an outlet more than anything else for kids wanting to play sports,” Spry said.
“We actually have a big mixture of kids … and about 20 refugees who are predominantly Sudanese. It’s very important, at a club and community level, to engage with these kids, to foster that spirit of community participation and [remove] those cultural [stigmas].”
The club may have several future NBL players on its hands – Spry says there are a couple of “very talented kids” playing for the Storm.
The club trains every Wednesday and Thursday and plays on Saturdays in the Melton Basketball Association.
