Baking as easy as cupcakes

Sallie Davies

Bakers will be delighted with the classes on offer at the Melton South Community Centre.

Chef Sallie Davies will be teaching home cooks the tricks of her trade in cupcake and two-tier cake decorating in coming weeks as part of the centre’s raft of short courses.

Participants will learn the intricacies of fondant icing, chocolate ganache and buttercream, as well as piping techniques in this Thursday’s cupcake decorating class.

There’s more to learn at the beginners cake decorating class on March 1 which will focus on the latest baking trend –semi-naked drizzle cakes.

Centre manager Pam Madej said the courses cater to the interests of the community.

“It seems that people look for something different to do,” Ms Madej said.

“These are skills that people can use at home in their everyday lives. It can be very expensive to purchase cakes for birthdays and special occasions. Having the skills to bake your own is wonderful.”

Students will need to bring an apron, container to take their baked goods home in and three coloured gels (any colour).

The cupcake decorating class this Thursday runs from 10am to noon.
