With school returning this week, residents of Melton and Moorabool are being encouraged to be vigilant when driving in school zones.
Drivers should look out for road signs that state what times the zones apply. Generally, there are 40 kilometres per hour speed zones around schools between 8am and 9.30am in the morning and 2.30pm and 4pm in the afternoon.
However, some school zones have changed to be permanently 40 kilometres per hour at all times.
Other zones may have electronic signs which will change the speed throughout the day.
With the addition of new schools in Melton and Moorabool, some residents may not realise any changes have been made and are encouraged to take note of any new changes.
VicRoads encourage people to follow these tips:
* Watch out for pedestrians and be aware that young children can be unpredictable and difficult to see
* Give cyclists plenty of space
* Slow down in school speed zones during school times
* Be extra cautious around schools.
Kids can stay safe by:
* Learning about road safety
* Practicing crossing the road with parents.
