Melton parents are among hundreds of people across the north-west suburbs who will learn skills to potentially save children’s lives.
North Western Melbourne Primary Health Network (NWMPHN) has teamed up with Tiny Hearts First Aid to fund infant and toddler first-aid training sessions for Melton parents and parents-to-be, starting later this month and running until mid-2018.
Tiny Hearts chief executive Nikki Jurcutz said the three-hour sessions would teach parents how to respond to medical situations such as choking, burns, allergies and drowning.
Baby, child and adult CPR skills would be included.
“The program also provides parents with an understanding of what healthcare options are available, particularly in the after-hours timeframe,” Ms Jurcutz said.
“The program aims to enhance the knowledge, skills and confidence of parents to make more informed and appropriate decisions when it comes to the health of their children.”
NWMPHN’s Christopher Carter said the program was a great boost for child and parent health in the region.
“Parents will learn what to do in an emergency, as well as less urgent medical situations,” associate professor Carter said.
“They will also have the knowledge to choose the best place to get help if they need it, whether that be from their GP, at an after-hours clinic or a hospital emergency room.”
Initial training sessions will be held at Melton Community Centre on Saturday, November 25, between 9am and 12.30pm. Register at bit.ly/2zsfc2V.
