Melton RSL has cancelled its traditional Anzac Day service and march, but is calling on residents to not ignore the day.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and the banning of large gatherings, Melton RSL has been forced to abandon its usual commemorations.

Melton RSL president Ian Lawrey said the decision was disappointing.

“It’s obviously disappointing, but we’ve got to be responsible and we have no control over how many people would congregate on the day,” Mr Lawrey said.

“We’d still ask people to take some time on the day to recognise the significance of the occasion, whether that’s watching the service from the Shrine on TV, which will obviously be scaled down as well, or just taking a moment to think about the sacrifice of those that have gone before us.

“As the Prime Minister said recently it’s probably the most important day of the year, not only for veterans but to those that enjoy the life they’ve got today because of the veterans.

“Do whatever you feel is appropriate without congregating in groups.”

Mr Lawrey said the RSL was still providing support services to members throughout the pandemic, with face to face meetups replaced by phone calls, and other similar alterations.
