Love’s an adventure

Music and candlelight brought Anna and Alexander McKenzie together years ago and there has rarely been a dull moment since.

The Kurunjang residents, who celebrated their 60th anniversary last Wednesday, met in 1955 at a church carols by candlelight event in Dandenong, where they later married.

“For me, it was love at first sight,” Mrs McKenzie said. “We were both young – I was 20 and my husband was a bit younger when we met. I had not been in Australia that long, coming from Holland, and my language capabilities were not that crash hot.

“We became good friends … and that’s where it started.”

The McKenzies set out on a caravanning honeymoon and eventually settled in Lorne before moving to Melton 32 years ago. Their marriage has been full of adventure.

“We can look back and we’ve had really tremendous days,” Mrs McKenzie said.

“My husband was a commercial pilot and we’ve done all sorts of things together like water skiing, boating, fishing and flying.

“I’m a great believer in, ‘If you want to do something in your life, do it’. That’s what we did – we had a go at anything at all.

“I can’t believe where the years have gone. It’s absolutely astonishing.”

The Mckenzies celebrated their diamond anniversary with their two children, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
