A 30-year-old Aboriginal prisoner who was incarcerated at the Dame Phyllis Frost Centre has died in Sunshine Hospital.

The woman was taken to hospital last week but died on Monday surrounded by family members.

In a statement, Corrections Victoria said: “We recognise that all deaths in custody have impacts on family members, friends, victims and the broader Aboriginal community, and we’re working to ensure they are provided with the support they need”.

Corrections Victoria said it is in contact with the woman’s family to ensure culturally appropriate notification and grieving processes are followed.

Corrections Victoria said it has also advised the Aboriginal Justice Caucus and will hold a smoking ceremony at the prison, where the inmates are being offered support.

The Coroner’s Court will determine a cause and time of death and more information will be released if the family wishes.
