Reading sessions benefit young and old

Hunter and Hayley love books – but they need a bit of help with reading.

Thanks to Melton council’s Let’s Read Together program, the youngsters are paired with the “young at heart” every Tuesday.

Elderly readers use children’s books to encourage active imaginations and a love of reading. The group has explored everything from mythical worlds of yore to futuristic tales of flying cars.

Melton mayor Kathy Majdlik said the program, which started last month, helped pre-school children who may not have grandparents living nearby to connect with their elders.

“For our seniors, coming into regular contact with young children can help alleviate loneliness and boost their mental and emotional health through laughter and stories,” Cr Majdlik said.

“It really is a lovely story of two generations at the opposite ends of the spectrum coming together and sharing a wonderful experience through reading.”

The program will run every Tuesday from 11.30am-12.15pm until December 8 at Diggers Rest Family Services Centre, Plumpton Road.
