A growing celebration for Friends of Melton Botanic Garden

Without plants, there is no future – that’s a belief Friends of Melton Botanic Garden president John Bentley hopes residents will take to heart.

The group will host guided walks, workshops and bird watching tours for the national Botanic Gardens Day on May 27.

“It’s all about botany and teaching people about the role that plants and trees play in our lives,” Mr Bentley said. “Without plants, there’s no future.”

“The point of the day is for people to see and know your botanic gardens and to appreciate the plants and open space that we have in Melton for relaxation.”

Since last year’s event, an amphitheatre and Mediterranean garden have been added to the Melton garden and the island in the main lake is being turned into a bird sanctuary.

“We now have a botanic trail in the garden with new paths and bridges around the lake leading to the Toolern Creek shared path,”
Mr Bentley said. “[On May 27] We’re kicking off with a bird walk around the garden, hosted by the Melton Environment Group, and later we will open the nursery and there will be plant sales throughout the day.

“We’re hoping to show the garden to people and provide an opportunity for them to get involved and help build the garden up.”

The Botanic Gardens Day event will run from 9am-3pm.
