Melton council has received about 300 objections to an application by Boral to build a replacement quarry processing plant at its Deer Park site.
The current plant was opened in the 1960s. Although it has been upgraded several times, Boral Quarries’ southern region general manager Peter Head says it needs replacing.
He said the replacement quarry would feature recycled water sprays at dust-emission points and noise reduction systems.
“The proposed plant would provide the advantages expected of a 50-year advancement in technology, including significant efficiency and environmental gains such as a reduction in operational noise and dust generation,” Mr Head said.
The proposed replacement plant would be slightly to the north-west of the current plant, just off Riding Boundary Road, Truganina, and would be in operation from 2018 if approved.
Planning Services manager Bob Baggio said the council received the application on June 1, and a recommendation was expected to be reported at the council’s October 13 meeting.
“The application has been advertised and about 300 objections have been lodged with council,” Mr Baggio said.
