Melton SES shed grows to meet alarming need

The Melton State Emergency Service’s headquarters was fast becoming too small to keep up with its growing amount of equipment and volunteer numbers.

But thanks to a $50,000 building extension grant from Melton council, equipment previously stored in a loading bay and containers on the High Street site can be moved into the unit’s shed.

SES Melton unit controller Nic Gargalakos said he was relieved.

He said Melton city had grown at an alarming rate but the unit’s facilities had failed to keep up.

“We have more equipment and more members so we needed a bigger space.”

Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett, Melton mayor Sophie Ramsey and local emergency services on Monday attended the opening of the 20-square-metre extension.

SES members are hoping to use the extra space as a storage room and a training site for volunteers.

Mr Gargalakos said the SES unit’s recent open day was a “huge success”, and people ranging in age “from 17 to 70” signed up to volunteer with the SES.

He said the unit would look into making the open day a yearly event.
