Speeding drivers made up more than half of all offences detected on Melton roads during the Easter long weekend.
The five-day Easter road blitz Operation Crossroads had police from Melton and across the state out in full force in an attempt to curb the rising road toll.
Police targeted the key contributing factors to road trauma: speed, alcohol and drug impairment, distracted drivers, fatigue and not wearing seatbelts.
In Melton, 45 drivers were nabbed for speeding and two were found not wearing a seatbelt. Unregistered vehicles continued to be a problem in Melton and across the state, with 19 unregistered vehicles found in Melton and a further 12 unlicensed drivers.
Four people were killed during the long weekend, including a man who died following a crash at Mt Cottrell.
Melton’s Acting Senior Sergeant Paul Filbey said deaths on the roads were tragedies that had ripple effects into the community. “It’s not just the impact on that person, but it’s friends, family and colleagues that have to deal with that,” he said.
Acting Senior Sergeant Filbey urged drivers to slow down.
“It’s important that everyone realise that there are inherent risks on the road and we have to be so careful,” he said.
“Be careful on the roads, drive for the conditions and get home safely,” he said.
