Melton Primary School’s Kai Coward stood up to the challenge of “be brave and shave” this month, his golden mane sacrificed for the Leukaemia Foundation’s World’s Greatest Shave.
The nine-year-old grade 4 pupil was surrounded by his friends, teachers and family when the shave took place at his school earlier this month.
Although admitting he was a little nervous, Kai knew that there was an important task at hand.
“I did it for charity, to help sick kids so they don’t die and so they can still live happy,” he said.
Kai said he was thrilled to have the support of his school community.
He said the new hair style would take some getting used to.
“I feel a bit strange. When the wind comes it feels a little bit colder.”
Classroom teacher Danny Roberts said all the pupils did their bit on the day by donning crazy hair, hair colour and wigs to support the cause.
“The children thoroughly enjoyed the day,” Mr Roberts said. “They were very enthusiastic about joining in the activities and showing off their crazy hair.”
Mr Roberts said it was important that teachers and students embraced the school’s values, one of which is “caring”.
“We pride ourselves on our involvement [and support] for organisations like the Leukemia Foundation and other organisations which need as much support as they can get,” he said.
The school raised more than $600 for the foundation, while Kai has raised more than $380 independently. To sponsor Kai, visit www.worldsgreatestshave.com/ and search “Kai Coward”.
