L2P program: A wheely good deal for Melton, Moorabool

A passion for cars and working with young people inspired Gary King to volunteer for Melton and Moorabool’s L2P driver mentoring program.

For the past two years, the Kurunjang resident has helped teach young drivers safe driving skills and prepare them for their licence test.

“I like working with younger people, it sort of keeps me young, too,” Mr King, 73, said.

Mr King joined the Djerriwarrh Community and Education Services program, wanting to lend a helping hand in the community.

Mentors like Mr King help disadvantaged learner drivers complete the mandatory 120 hours of driving practice before applying for their probationary licence.

“Driving schools are very expensive for young people to constantly keep going to to make up their 120 hours,” he said.

“So it’s a way I can help them out and teach them what I’ve learnt over many years.

“You can give them the benefit of your experience.”

Seventy young people have gained their licence since the program started five years ago.

“It’s always a thrill when they get through,” Mr King said.

Djerriwarrh is seeking more volunteers and will provide training for new mentors next month. For more details, phone 8746 1000.
