Melton is among Melbourne’s three worst areas for malicious damage to vehicles.
RACV statistics released last week show Melton vehicle owners claimed $79,833 in insurance for malicious damage in 2013, with 18 claims at an average of $4435 per claim.
The municipality of Brimbank, which includes St Albans and Sunshine, topped the list with 40 claims worth $146,610, followed by Wyndham with 33 claims adding up to $90,942.
More than 100 vehicles were maliciously damaged across Melbourne’s western suburbs last year.
The most common incidents were breaking into vehicles, smashing windows and keying, scratching and denting bonnets and roofs.
RACV general manager Paul Northey said most attacks happened between 6am and midday.
“Many people assume night is the danger time for damage to be inflicted, but the evidence shows vandals can strike at any time, so we encourage motorists to identify safe places to park at all times,” Mr Northey said.
“Take your valuables and accessories out of the car, make sure your windows are up, and lock your vehicle. These simple steps may prevent a motorist becoming a victim of crime.”
Mr Northey said GPS devices were fast becoming a target for car break-ins.
“Leaving your GPS holder fixed to the windscreen or an iPod charger plugged in, is like leaving your wallet on the dashboard,” he said.
“Always remove the GPS from display, as well as the support bracket and suction pads, if possible.”
