Time is running out for residents to have their say on naming new suburbs across the City of Melton.
Melton council is inviting the community to help vote on 11 new suburb names, with mayor Bob Turner saying the suburbs will accommodate an additional 100,000 residents by 2030.
A suburb-naming committee, made up of local residents, councillors and representatives of Aboriginal, history and business groups, has developed a shortlist of suburb names for the community to vote on.
About 600 votes have been registered so far, with some residents making their own suggestions.
“In planning for this growth, most existing suburbs will remain unaffected, but some suburbs will have their boundaries moved and names changed,” Cr Turner said.
In voting, residents are given the option of at least three name changes and asked to select their preferred name.
Options include Pinkerton, Dunbar Ponds, Bonnie Brook, Thornhill, Kilmarnock, Yaloake and Mount Atkinson. Residents have suggested names such as Navan Lakes and Taylors Rise. People can have their say by providing feedback via mail, online or by attending a community forum.
Entries will close on September 1 with one entry allowed per person. Despite the name changes, postcodes will remain the same as will the names of housing estates.
