Melton emergencies project funded

Melton council has welcomed a state government funding announcement that will help develop a multi-stage community “resilience” program.

The Victorian government is providing $91,700 to Melton and Wyndham councils to develop a program aimed at building the emergency capabilities of community leaders, faith-based groups, seniors groups, service clubs and culturally and linguistically diverse communities.

Western Metropolitan Region MP Andrew Elsbury said the $243,700 Western Areas Resilience project would include leadership training, community forums, developing emergency planning ‘toolkits’ and producing a training package to help mentors.

Melton council operations manager Greg Wood said the project would address a gap in the community.

“The funding will be used for a project officer to work across both [Melton-Wyndham] communities with the objective to build community resilience to emergency situations,” he said. “This has been identified as a gap in both our councils’ emergency planning arrangements.

“With this funding, the community will gain greater understanding of the roles they and all levels of government play in planning, preparation, response and recovery through a localised approach to and from the community.”
