The Melton community is in mourning after the death of one of its finest.
Leo “The Tiger” Johnson OAM (above) died last week after battling an aggressive form of brain cancer since early 2012.
He leaves behind his wife Elaine, family and friends.
Mr Johnson will be remembered for tireless voluntary work that included being part of the Melton New and Emerging Communities Network, Melton Cultural Garden group and a “reconnect with the land” program for refugees.
The Kurunjang resident was a shire councillor for almost 10 years, served as a director at Djerriwarrh Employment and Education Services, and was awarded life membership of 979fm Melton Community Radio. He also umpired 428 sub-district cricket matches and received an Order of Australia in 2013.
Gorton MP Brendan O’Connor paid tribute to the “instantly likeable man” saying his presence in the community would be missed.
“Leo was also a gentleman,” Mr O’Connor said. “Under his blokey exterior was a man who cared deeply for his community. He was tireless in his work for the Melton community and he was a true hero to many.”
Mr O’Connor described Mr Johnson as a loyal Labor man who had an “unwavering commitment to fairness and social justice”.
Melton MP Don Nardella, who knew Mr Johnson for more than three decades, said it would be hard to find anyone with a greater commitment to serving his community.
“Leo was held in high esteem by all who knew him and by those who have worked with him over his long and distinguished involvement in the Melton community,” he said.
