Windfall for Melton, Buninyong learning hubs

Almost $30,000 in grants was awarded to community centres across Melton and Buninyong last week to help with the delivery of programs and services.

Upper house member for Western Victoria Simon Ramsay announced the training delivery support grants for nine Learn Local organisations, including Melton South Community Centre Inc.

Centre co-ordinator Pam Madej said the $3000 grant was needed for the running of community programs and courses.

“It’s excellent for our community,” she said.

“It’s getting things for classes we wouldn’t be able to buy ourselves because we don’t have the money.”

Ms Madej said it was important to try to provide the best resources for the community, including up-to-date equipment in classrooms.

The centre will use the grant to buy new classroom equipment, including whiteboards and other teachers’ aids.

About 350 people visit the centre each week for classes, courses, support
groups and children’s playgroup programs.

Mr Ramsay said the grants were important to help organisations like the Melton South Community Centre deliver their programs and services to vulnerable learners who may face barriers to participate in skills training.

“The Victorian Coalition Government believes it’s crucial that those with limited access to learning opportunities have an opportunity to access quality education,” Mr Ramsay said.
