Melton council budget passes, with rate rise

Melton council adopted its 2014-15 budget last week despite receiving almost 200 submissions relating to its 4.8 per cent rates rise.

The motion to adopt was passed after councillors Lara Carli and Broden Borg vehemently opposed it and called on their fellow councillors to listen to the community.

“It’s sad that the council has not listened to the community … residents can’t cope with these increases,” Cr Carli said.

“Melton City Council needs to stop being a Wally with people’s money; enough is enough.”

Cr Borg agreed, saying the council needed to “spend wisely and put money where it matters”.

However, mayor Bob Turner described the budget as “financially responsible”, saying it showed a commitment to continuing to provide high-quality services and infrastructure for a growing population.

“The 2014-2015 budget includes a modest 4.8 per cent increase in the level of rates and charges,” he said.

“We have been very mindful to keep rates at a reasonable level while balancing the need for increased service delivery and infrastructure to meet community expectations,” he said.

Councillors also voted to add to the adopted budget new initiatives including $18,430 to Melton South Football and Netball Club for ball-protection fencing, and $5610 for public lighting at Brookside College.

The council pensioner rebate increases by $5 to $65.
