Bungaree Reserve makes the grade at football championships

The redeveloped Bungaree Recreation Reserve hosted the WorkSafe Country Championships at the weekend, cementing its status as a premier sports ground.

The reserve, which underwent its $2.3 million redevelopment in 2012, was chosen ahead of dozens of venues to host football and netball games between the Central Highlands (CHFL) and Loddon Valley football leagues on Saturday. “As host league, it’s expected the very best facilities are used where possible,’’ CHFL spokeswoman Diane Ryan said.

‘‘Given the recent redevelopment of the facilities at Bungaree, the ground was a clear standout to host this event.’’

The reserve is home to Bungaree Football Club, the league’s second-oldest club. The multi-million upgrade included new changerooms, a community health club space, medical rooms, offices and a commercial kitchen.

Moorabool mayor Paul Tatchell said the championships’ success showed what could be achieved by partnerships between the community, state and local governments.

“None of this would have been possible individually,’’ Cr Tatchell said.

‘‘Every stakeholder worked tirelessly to achieve this result. Saturday’s game not only showed off the best of country footy, it reminded people of the commitment of our communities to making Moorabool the best place to live.”

The community raised more than $100,000 to make the project a reality after the council tipped in $1.1 million and the state government provided $400,000.

Bungaree’s Chris O’Keefe kicked two goals on Saturday as the CHFL won 19.16 (130) to 11.12 (78).
