A group of dedicated teenagers is working hard to create a better future for themselves.
Known as the “global achievers”, the Kurunjang Secondary College students are busily preparing for the challenges of future employment by creating resumés to rival some adults’.
Humanities co-ordinator David Gorton said the youngsters spend one evening a week completing online programs provided by prestigious international universities offering Massive Open Online Courses.
Mr Gorton said the students had been studying content from Harvard, Stanford and other world-renowned universities, resulting in certification after a month of study and testing.
“In addition to the regular curriculum, the global achievers have been staying after school … recognising that they are in competition with a global workforce,” he said.
Mr Gorton said through the online learning modules from a range of international partners, students have been able to develop their interests beyond the curriculum.
“When this group of students applies for a university place or attempts to gain employment they will have an amazing resumé.”
Jamie-Lee Broderick, 14, said she chose to take part in the course in a bid to gain an advantage over other job seekers and establish an impressive resume.
“I enjoy it, even though it’s challenging. It’s rewarding when I complete it,” the year 8 student told Star Weekly.
“Sometimes I wish [the course] was longer; you find out a lot about getting a job.”
Another participant, Sam Welham, 13, says he hopes the extra studying will result in future employment opportunities.
“I think it’s important and in the next few years it will be even more important. I find it really interesting.”
