Heartbroken relatives of slain Melton West mother Fiona Warzywoda say the justice system has again failed victims of family violence.
In a statement released before a candle- light vigil in Sunshine last Tuesday evening, her stepmother, Simone Warzywoda, said the safety of women and children had to come first.
“This tragedy has touched many of us in one way or another,” she said. “Time and again with domestic violence … the justice system continues to fail women and children.”
More than 1000 people paid their respects to Ms Warzywoda during a silent vigil on the corner of Hampshire and Devonshire roads.
Ms Warzywoda, 33, was allegedly stabbed to death by her former partner, Craig McDermott, in the middle of a busy Sunshine shopping strip on April 16, minutes after leaving her solicitor’s office. Police have confirmed Ms Warzywoda had taken out an intervention order against him.
Dozens of bouquets and heart-shaped cards were piled on a public bench during last week’s vigil.
Family and friends comforted each other, while others held placards which stated “Domestic violence, not in my name” and “How many more?”.
Vigil organiser Sophie Dutertre said she was overwhelmed by the massive turnout.
McDermott, 38, has been charged with murder and remanded to face Melbourne Magistrates Court on August 7.
