VicRoads’ HQ move to Ballarat ‘a boon’ for region

Plans to move VicRoads’ headquarters to Ballarat could lead to more people moving to Ballan, Gordon and Dunnstown, according to a state election candidate.

Liberal candidate for the new Buninyong electorate Ben Taylor said at least 400 jobs would move to a site beside Ballarat’s Civic Hall if the Coalition retained power in November.

Mr Taylor said the move would generate more than $40 million a year for Ballarat and surrounding regions.

“Some [people] will choose to relocate to areas such as Ballan, Gordon and Dunnstown to enjoy the unique lifestyles they offer,” he said.

“This provides a positive flow-on effect to the schools and businesses, to community involvement in the sports clubs – even a meal at the local pub.”

But the state opposition said the proposed relocation wouldn’t create more jobs. ‘‘We need to work to create new ones,’’ a Labor spokesman said.
