Cops on the streets of Melton a high-profile response to crime

A police operations response unit (ORU) is already having an impact in Melton, making a number of arrests in the past two weeks.

The unit, which began work in Melton on February 17, is focusing on residential and commercial burglaries, theft from and theft of motor vehicles, public order and traffic offences until the end of April.

Inspector Stephen Mutton said the unit was targeting areas where these crimes were likely to occur, such as train stations, shopping centres and new housing estates.

“Having the support of a specialist unit such as the ORU means we will have a higher visible presence on our streets,’’ he said.

“We have already received some positive feedback from the community that seeing more police out and about makes them feel safer.”

The unit is operating in Melton after an application by local police for help with high-volume crimes. It has made a number of arrests, including of three men believed to be responsible for thefts of and from motor vehicles. Inspector Mutton urged residents
to take simple preventive steps, such as locking car and house doors, to avoid becoming victims. “It takes a matter of seconds for a thief to open the door and take anything you have left on the seat of your
car,” he said.”
