The importance of fire danger ratings and the risks of machinery igniting blazes have been strongly emphasised by the CFA.
Bacchus Marsh CFA second lieutenant Ryan O’Shannessy issued the warning after six trucks were called to a fire on a Hopetoun Park farm last Thursday.
Mr O’Shannessy said the fire (the aftermath above) was started when grass was being mowed. It damaged farming equipment and burnt a hectare of farmland.
“Anybody doing any activity that could cause a fire during the fire period needs to have the resources with them to put out a fire,’’ he said.
“In cases like this, you need to think about whether work can be delayed to a low-fire danger period. This was done during a high-danger period, while the next day was low-to-medium risk. If you’re concerned about what you can and can’t do, check out the CFA website.”
