Melton: Man attacked from behind with wooden stake

A man has suffered serious head injuries and lost a tooth after he was hit with a large wooden stake in Melton.

Police say the 42-year-old Melton man was walking south along Palmerston Street in Melton about 9.50pm on Saturday when he was attacked from behind with the wooden stake, knocking him unconscious.

He was taken to The Alfred hospital suffering serious head injuries and remains in a serious but stable condition.

Police believe the victim was attacked by a male, who ran from the scene after and was last seen heading north on Palmerston Street.

A small, white sedan was seen driving past the incident, and police believe the occupants of the car may be able to offer more information.
