The Foreman is not your typical high-school drama production. Instead, it explores American politics, history and gender inequality.

What would the world look like if women had been allowed in politics in the early 1900s?

Bacchus Marsh College drama teacher Christopher Doughty is directing, writing and producing the school play, set in the US in the years 1908 to 1914.

“The president decides that men are too compulsive to run the nation and creates a secret organisation of women who advise him on various crises,” Mr Doughty says of the play.

“They’re the ones who implement prohibition, they advise him on [world] war and the Empire State Building.”

Mr Doughty says he wanted to “push the boundaries a little bit” and explore gender inequality.

Sarah, 14, who is playing lead character Madam Watson, the foreman, said she was “humbled” to have been chosen for the lead role.

Her thoughts on gender inequality?

“I don’t look into it much but I believe men and women should be able to do everything equally,” Sarah said.

The play will run from 6.30pm at the Bacchus Marsh College hall, Grant Street, from September 6-8. Tickets cost $10 and can be purchased at the school. Details: 5367 2955
