If Alisan Saglam’s latest creation is anything to go by, ‘daring’ and ‘impressive’ fall short as descriptions.

The 17-year-old Melton Kurunjang Secondary College student eagerly waited for his fabric to grow (from bacteria cultures), eventually becoming the beautiful leotard on his model and fellow student Adeng Muor.

At the recent Fashion Awards Australia event, Alisan was placed third in the Recyclable Wearable Art category.

For him, fashion is an “instant language”, connecting people.

“The first thing people see is your fashion sense,” he says.

“Fashion has a very big impact on everyday life and how people see you.”

Alisan says he was “overwhelmed” when his fabric and vision finally came together; all his hard work was paying off.

He hopes to study design at the Whitehouse Institute of Design in Melbourne’s CBD then land an internship at a high-end fashion house.

“I want to do a bit of everything – styling, fabric-making and designing.”

Alisan has eight words of advice for aspiring designers: “Stay true to you and never give up.”
